Why Are We In Business? We Must Keep Things In Perspective
Exactly Why Are We In Business Anyway?
I have been extremely focused on achieving business objectives that I established lately. You know, we all have goals with timelines right? My business was gaining momentum, and I was kickin’ it into overdrive. In fact with my Article Marketing Mastery strategy I’ve been driving truck loads of traffic to my blog. I finally was getting this internet marketing stuff really dialed in!
Our family scheduled an awesome vacation to Disneyland last week, but I was not even excited to go. In fact, I was stressed out that I had to leave my work. I felt that I would be “getting behind.”
I went on the trip and had a blast with my wife and 2 kids. I love Disneyland!
During the long drive home I was able to do some thinking. I reviewed all the fun we just had together, and then started thinking about getting back to work.
That’s when it hit me like a ton of bricks.
I asked myself “Why are we in business?”
This question must be in the forefront of every entrepreneur’s mind. For me and my family taking trips like this one is the exact reason why we are in business in the first place. Our dream is to simply have the income and time freedom to create awesome adventures together. To us this is the ultimate lifestyle. Now we just want to bring more family and friends along with us. The dream constantly grows.
It is so easy to get all wrapped up in our work. This is especially true when you are doing any kind of online marketing. You sit in front of the computer and get focused on branding yourself as a leader all day long. Hours can go by, and you don’t even realize it sometimes.
On this same note, many online marketers get frustrated with not getting the results they are after as soon as they had hoped. There are tons of advertisements online about how you can start up a home based business, point, click, and bang! Cash just flows into your accounts right?
We all have to remember why we are in business.
We all need to have a “why” for doing what we’re doing here.
Returning from this trip was a real eye-opener for me. I am making a change in my life. I have resolved to ask myself “Why are we in business?” every day. I will meditate on that thought. I will use my dream to motivate me when I don’t feel like serving others online. I will use it to maintain a balance between work and family time as well. I will also use this to help and teach my business partners so they can enjoy their journeys to wherever their dreams take them.
I challenge you to ask yourself…..”Why are we in business?”
- Ask yourself that question.
- Take about 15 minutes.
- Do it somewhere where you can be alone to simply determine exactly why you are in business.
And as always learn from my blundering and take massive action to move toward your dreams.
I sincerely hope that this gives you the kick-in-the-teeth that it did for me.

Great post Steve! I can so relate to your self-talk before you went on your trip. I go through the same thing every time I even consider taking a day away from work. I used to feel the same way when I worked a “regular” job, but for a very different reason. Back then it was because I was so stressed about making my quotas – now it’s because I just enjoy what I’m doing so much it’s hard to stay away. Still, you are so right about the importance of taking breaks … and I love Disneyland to – grew up not far from there

It’s relieving to hear that someone else has the same concerns as I do! Thanks Marquita.

Steve, I really appreciate your post and your timing is just perfect. We have a holiday next week here in Ireland . It is simple we start a business to look after our families. We can become so busy we forget to keep on track with what is important for us including family. All the best Rosemary

Glad I wrote it in time for your trip……Have a great time in Ireland.

Steve,
You are so right. We do tend to forget why we’re in business. Many of us going it alone figure if we’re not working we’re not moving ahead.
The goal is ongoing residual income to be with the family. But, don’t forget them while you’re on the road to independence.
Glad you had the insight, Steve.

That’s right Rick. We need to work hard, but not lose sight of what’s important to us in the process.

Steve,
You got this lifestyle keyed to the point of total balance. That is what you have accomplished here. You balanced what you love doing. Sharing all that knowledge and supporting others with passion. That time just went by.
Now, realizing taking the time to enjoy your living your dream. Taking the family on trips and also meeting new people during that journey.
This was a fine example of balancing family and your business. Both loves of your life. Both supporting roles. Both helping with all that energy you have.
Very well written Steve. I knew visiting your blog would increase my wisdom. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks William. ….its taken me 6years and a ton of personal growth training to come to the realization that we need to enjoy the journey…..Afterall, they all say success is a journey not a destination right?

Hi Steve
Life is short and if we don’t enjoy the journey we’re wasting time. I’m glad you take time away from work to enjoy other parts of life. When you love what you do its hard sometimes to tear yourself away from work but once you do creativity kicks in and new ideas start flowing and life becomes more balanced.

Great insight Anne. That’s exactly what happens when you walk away from marketing for a bit. Even though it sometimes tough to leave a project when you’re in the middle of it.
Julieanne van Zyl on July 20, 2011
Hi Steve, it’s so easy to forget isn’t it? Have a break and a holiday with lots of fun probably does more for your business than working hard all day! People are more attracted to joining you in business when they see you having fun also. bye for now, Julieanne

Steve,
I took time to ask myself this question a few years back and it really helped me put things in perspective. It helped cut off the “excess fat” and take this to another level. I think everyone should take time to figure out why they are doing what they are doing.
